When they arrived back at the palace, Xendara’s younger siblings were waiting for her. They bombarded her with hugs before launching into their adventures of the day. Xendara’s shoulders relaxed as she helped her mother put them to sleep by telling them the bedtime story of the first Progenitors.

As she came out of Riyad’s room, Darijus stood smiling at her. Her breath hooked as a multitude of emotions rushed through her. Copper’s words echoed in her mind.

“Did you miss me?” he walked closer to her.

Xendara’s pulse quickened. “You’ve been my constant companion. It was weird not having you lurking behind me.”

“I’ll have to talk to your sisters about adjusting your force field. It’s a terrible idea that they didn’t include me in their plans.”

His joke brought a smile to her face.

“If you’re not too tired, I was wondering if you’d take a walk around the garden? I promise you won’t need your new gadget.”

“Let me guess; you have it all planned and have already talked to the guards and Acacia.”

“Of course!” he admitted without shame, “I know I can’t be spontaneous with you. I’d give everyone heart attacks.”

Xendara frowned, then she placed her arm on his, “If only we had such freedom.”
